Car sales up in January, figures show

More Aussies were looking for car insurance policies last month, as new figures showed that vehicle sales were up.

According to the VFACTS statistics published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), 76,783 vehicles were purchased in January, which was a 4.3 per cent improvement on the corresponding month in 2011.

The study indicated that sports utility vehicles (SUVs) are growing in popularity across the country.

It appears that Queensland is a stronghold for new car buying, as drivers from across the state snapped up an extra 2,500 vehicles when compared with 2011.

Toyota was the best performing manufacturer, having a market share of 18.3 per cent, ahead of Holden on 11.8 per cent.

"This is an encouraging January sales result and provides a good start to 2012," commented FCAI chief executive Ian Chalmers.

Insurer AAMI recently conducted a study that showed that half of surveyed Aussies have been involved in a road rage incident of some description.
