Young Aussies 'lacking confidence behind the wheel'

Many young Aussies could be forced to make a claim on their car insurance policy, as new research has shown that half believe current driving licensing requirements do not give them enough skills to prepare them to take to the roads with confidence.

A study conducted by leading Aussie insurer AAMI also discovered that nearly three-quarters of motorists aged between 18 and 24 should have to do a safe driving course.

The survey also indicated that 63 per cent of people feel that student drivers should have to do a minimum number of hours training before they are given a licence.

Corporate affairs manager at AAMI Reuben Aitchison said the findings are a "wake-up call".

"This means we have tens of thousands of young people qualifying for their licenses every year without feeling prepared for what may happen on the roads," he remarked.

According to Commsec, now could be the best time to buy a car, as prices are at their lowest for 35 years.
