Free from bells and whistles, the St. George Gold Low Rate Credit Card offers competitive rates with the bonus of free insurance cover.
Key features: Available as a Visa or MasterCard, the St. George Gold Low Rate Credit Card does what it says: the low rates begin with the introductory 1.99% purchase rate, which reverts to a middling 15.99% after nine months. You won't get gouged on the late payment or overlimit fees either, which both come in at $9. There's no rewards system, but the low $79 annual fee buys cardholders free travel and transit accident insurance, with purchase cover thrown in, too.
Who it's good for: Cardholders who want to prioritise paying down their debt - the St. George Gold Low Rate Credit Card gives you a reasonable nine-month window to slay your debt dragon. If you're not fussed about earning rewards but do enjoy free insurance cover, this credit card could be your perfect match. Besides, anyone who's ever had to make a travel insurance claim would argue the cover is worth more than a free hand-held vacuum that takes two years to save points for.
Any catches? In some states, the foreign ATM fee rockets up to $2. And if you're hoping to transfer a credit debt from an existing St. George, BankSA or Bank of Melbourne credit card, forget it - the 1.99% balance transfer offer won't apply to you.
