American Express Qantas Discovery Card Review

Review updated: 1 April 2015

Review published: 14 February 2012

What's hot:

  • Multi-award winner in Mozo's Experts Choice Awards

  • 7,500 bonus point offer

  • No annual fee

What's not:

  • 20.74% purchase rate

  • 1% credit establishment fee for balances transferred

Mozo snapshot:

Winner of bronze medals in the Mozo Experts Choice Rewards Credit Card Awards, the Qantas American Express Discovery credit card is a stand-out in the world of rewards credit cards with no annual fee and lots of rewards benefits. Earn 1 Qantas Point every time you spend $1 on everyday purchases and 1 additional bonus point for every $1 spent on selected Qantas products and services. Plus, apply by 30 June 2015 and you can get up to a bonus 7,500 Qantas Points and a 0.99% balance transfer offer for six months.

Key features:

The Qantas American Express Discovery credit card has a high interest rate of 20.74%. But this credit card doesn't have an annual fee and you'll get 44 days interest free, so long as you pay your balance off in full every month. The Qantas American Express Discovery card comes with top Amex benefits like fraud, purchase and refund protection, plus global customer service.

Apply before the 15 March 2015 and score 7,500 bonus points. Get the first 5,000 points for spending $300 on purchases within three months and a further 2,500 bonus points on your first spend in Australia on selected Qantas products and services.

If you've got debt that you want to transfer over to save on interest repayments the American Express Discovery card has a 0.99% offer for 6 months, but it also comes with an upfront 1% credit establishment fee.

Who it's good for:

If you simply want a low maintenance rewards credit card and plan to pay off your balance in full each month, the Qantas American Express Discovery Card would suit you perfectly. The minimum income requirement of $35,000 is not too steep and points are automatically credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account, so you don't have to worry about keeping track of rewards points.

Any catches?

With a high interest rate of over 20% this is not a credit card to carry debt on. Be sure to set up those automatic payments or you'll find a $30 late payment fee added to your statement.

Great rewards system

I enjoy earning Qantas Frequent Flyer points whilst using my American Express, however the lack of physical branches really restricts payments on the balance and most places do not take Amex or put a surcharge on using it.

Good value

I do not pay fees on my card. Regularly pay the full amount so incur no interest. The only issue I have are the charges from merchants on using the card and the number of merchants that do not accept the card. Not widely accepted in Asia.

No annual fee, good points scheme

There are no annual fees and I get frequent flier points for every dollar spent, interest rate seems a little high though.

Revealing rewards

How do we do it?

To work out the "Rewards value minus fees" in our Rewards Revealer we:

  • calculate how many points you'd get each year,
  • figure out how many flights or gift cards or cashback credits you could get for those points,
  • work out what that's actually worth to you,
  • take off the annual fee you'd pay.

More details:

  • Our calculations are designed to help you compare the value of different rewards schemes. To do this, we've looked at earning a one-way Sydney-Melbourne flight excluding taxes and charges, a return Sydney-London flight excluding taxes and charges, a $100 shopping Gift Card and $100 cashback. Most cards will also offer other rewards, which may be worth more or less than the ones we've shown.
  • We have made no allowance for bonus points for using your card at specific merchants, introductory offers or special offers. We have not assigned any value to instant discounts, insurances, ticketing and concierge services or other such benefits.
  • Rewards value calculations do not take credit card interest into account. If you do not pay off your card each month you may be better off looking for a card based on interest rates than on the value of rewards.
  • In products that have more than one card, a different mix of spend between American Express / Visa / MasterCard will give different results. Mozo's Rewards Revealer lets you choose the mix based on the way you would use such a product, and gives you tailored results.
  • We assume flights purchased with airline points are 'classic' or 'reward' economy seats with restricted seat availability. 'Any seat' rewards will probably cost more.
  • To compare the value of flight rewards, we sample online retail flight prices once a quarter based on the average price on a Wednesday 3 months in advance but outside NSW school holidays. For domestic flights we take the lowest available fare from each flight on that day from Qantas Red e-deal, Virgin Blue Blue Saver including baggage and Jetstar Jetsaver including baggage. We calculate the average price excluding taxes and surcharges for each airline, and also the average across all airlines (which we use when rewards are travel agent vouchers). For international flights, we take the lowest available fares on that same Wednesday from each of Qantas, Emirates, Singapore, Virgin Atlantic and Malaysian, assuming a return flight 2 weeks later, calculate the average price before taxes and surcharges and use this as our assumed cost of a flight on any airline.
  • Shopping rewards are based on $100 gift cards from a major national department store.
  • We make every effort to ensure our calculations are correct and up to date but make no guarantees.
