As long as you pay off your credit card balance each month, you’ll get up to 55 interest free days. During this time, you won’t be charged interest on purchases, so it’s super easy to keep credit card costs low. Just remember that interest free days begin when your statement cycle does, not when you make a purchase.
Your Credit Union SA credit card will attract an annual fee, unless you also have a home loan with Credit Union SA, in which case this fee is waived. You won’t have to pay ATM fees as long as you use an ATM within the rediATM network - not even on cash advances. But keep in mind that interest free days don’t apply to cash, so you will pay interest straight away. There’s also a 3% foreign exchange market that will apply if you’re making purchases overseas, or online shopping in a foreign currency.
While the minimum payment you must make on your Credit Union SA credit card is the greater of either $10 or 2% of your total balance, remember that this is just the bare minimum of what you should pay. It’s always a good idea to pay off your whole balance - because not only does that mean you’ll keep your interest free days for the next month, but you’ll also save on late payment fees and interest. There is no maximum amount you can pay off your credit card each month, and it’s a good idea to pay the whole balance whenever you can.
Yes you can! If you’re trying to manage your credit card balance with a balance transfer deal, you can use your Credit Union SA card to do it. Keep in mind that with this card, you get a relatively short 0% interest term to pay off your existing balance, so make sure you have a payment plan set in place to blast that debt in the time you have.
If you don’t, any remaining balance will start to attract interest at the usual rate.
International travellers can use their Credit Union SA credit card all around the world, wherever VISA is accepted.
Otherwise you can pick up a prepaid travel card before you go, and keep an eye on your holiday budget that way.
Because your Credit Union SA credit card works on the VISA network, you can use payWave to pay for small purchases under $100. You can make up to 10 payments per day using payWave, or up to a value of $1,000.
Credit card fraud poses a risk you should be aware of, but there’s no need to stress out too much. Your Credit Union SA credit card is protected by VISA’s zero liability policy, which means if someone is using your card without your permission, you won’t be charged. That is, as long as you haven’t contributed to the loss - for example, keeping your PIN number written down with your card counts as contributing, as you’ve made it easy for a thief to use your details - and as long as you alert Credit Union SA to the problem as soon as you notice it.
That’s why it’s a good idea to regularly monitor your credit card statements for any unusual activity.
