Woolworths Money Everyday Platinum Credit Card Review

Review updated: 30 June 2015

Review published: 9 August 2012

What's hot:

  • 0% balance transfer rate for 14 months

  • $0 first year annual fee ($49 thereafter)

What's not:

  • $35 late payment fee

Mozo snapshot:

The Woolworths Everyday Platinum Card is a great credit card if you're a regular shopper at Woolworths and Woolies owned outlets like Big W, Dan Murphy's, Caltex, BWS, and Dick Smiths. Rewards points are converted into shopping gift cards which help cut down the cost of your groceries.

Key features:

The Woolworths Everyday Platinum Card has a small $49 annual fee ($0 in the first year). If you're good at paying back your debt on time the Woolworths Everyday Platinum Card has a 55 day interest free period. Like all credit cards you don't want to fall behind on your payments or you'll be hit with a $35 late fee.

Earning rewards with The Woolworths Everyday Platinum Card is simple:
     - You earn 3 points for every dollar spent on Woolworths branded 'Select' products.
     - 2 points for every $1 spent in Woolworths and a number of other Woolworths owned outlets such as Dan Murphy's, Big W, Dick Smith, Thomas Dux and Woolworths liquor
     - 1 point for every $1 spent elsewhere

Every 4 months the points are converted into a Woolworths Everyday Money Shopping Card and you'll need around 4000 points to receive $20. Working just like a gift card, the Shopping Card will help knock down your grocery bill but don't hold on to them for too long. The Woolworths Everyday Money Shopping Card will expire 3 months after it's issued.

Who it's good for:

Anyone looking to save on interest of their credit card but ultimately best for loyal 'Fresh Food' people.

Any catches?

The Woolworths Everyday Platinum Card is unashamedly biased. Points can only be redeemed at Woolworths and Woolworths partners. If these rewards don't work for you and you prefer flight rewards from your credit card maybe consider the Woolworths Money Qantas Platinum Credit Card.

Awesome rewards program

We calculated the best credit card for us based on the annual cost and the rewards paid. We are seeing our annual costs refunded in rewards in the first quarter!

We have been using the Woolworths credit cards now for 7 years. As we put everything on the cards we get food stamps ( as I call them) or gift cards as Woolworths calls them every 3 months. We have used them as gift cards for friends or used them for the family. The Qantas points have been used around the house as required ie beater, bbq, toaster etc. When a dispute has arisen you get to speak to a local ( Kiwi).

Great rewards

Used as an extended payment system (up to 45+days) one has greater control of cash. Great provided only that payment for the total account is payed out to zero every month.

This card is great, as long as you NEVER have a problem or need to deal with their customer service team. The rewards program and $49 annual fee can't be beaten. Unfortunately this doesn't make up for the truly horrifyingly terrible customer call centre and overall lack of customer service. The people in the call centre are polite, but utterly useless. My card had a fraudulent charge, so they rang me and cancelled the card immediately (great, right?) 10 days later still no sign of card or the dispute paperwork I was promised. 20 days later my replacement card arrives. Another 4 days after this my statement is issued and the fraudulent charge is there, so I call and am told I will have to pay it. The retailer has 45 days to respond to the dispute enquiry, in the meantime I will be responsible for the charge and any interest (not true according to their TOS). It has now been 6 weeks and it's still not resolved. In a nutshell, excellent card as long as there is never a problem.

Revealing rewards

How do we do it?

To work out the "Rewards value minus fees" in our Rewards Revealer we:

  • calculate how many points you'd get each year,
  • figure out how many flights or gift cards or cashback credits you could get for those points,
  • work out what that's actually worth to you,
  • take off the annual fee you'd pay.

More details:

  • Our calculations are designed to help you compare the value of different rewards schemes. To do this, we've looked at earning a one-way Sydney-Melbourne flight excluding taxes and charges, a return Sydney-London flight excluding taxes and charges, a $100 shopping Gift Card and $100 cashback. Most cards will also offer other rewards, which may be worth more or less than the ones we've shown.
  • We have made no allowance for bonus points for using your card at specific merchants, introductory offers or special offers. We have not assigned any value to instant discounts, insurances, ticketing and concierge services or other such benefits.
  • Rewards value calculations do not take credit card interest into account. If you do not pay off your card each month you may be better off looking for a card based on interest rates than on the value of rewards.
  • In products that have more than one card, a different mix of spend between American Express / Visa / MasterCard will give different results. Mozo's Rewards Revealer lets you choose the mix based on the way you would use such a product, and gives you tailored results.
  • We assume flights purchased with airline points are 'classic' or 'reward' economy seats with restricted seat availability. 'Any seat' rewards will probably cost more.
  • To compare the value of flight rewards, we sample online retail flight prices once a quarter based on the average price on a Wednesday 3 months in advance but outside NSW school holidays. For domestic flights we take the lowest available fare from each flight on that day from Qantas Red e-deal, Virgin Blue Blue Saver including baggage and Jetstar Jetsaver including baggage. We calculate the average price excluding taxes and surcharges for each airline, and also the average across all airlines (which we use when rewards are travel agent vouchers). For international flights, we take the lowest available fares on that same Wednesday from each of Qantas, Emirates, Singapore, Virgin Atlantic and Malaysian, assuming a return flight 2 weeks later, calculate the average price before taxes and surcharges and use this as our assumed cost of a flight on any airline.
  • Shopping rewards are based on $100 gift cards from a major national department store.
  • We make every effort to ensure our calculations are correct and up to date but make no guarantees.

About Woolworths Money

Woolworths is Australia's biggest retail group. In 2008, Woolworths launched the Everyday Money Credit Card to reward customers who shop in Woolworths group stores. Woolworths chief executive Michael Luscombe says the card was designed to meet customer demand for “simple, easily achievable and useful rewards”. The Woolworths Everyday Money MasterCard offers 2 points for every dollar spent on purchases in stores operated by the Woolworths group and 1 point for every dollar spent on other purchases. Cardholders can also earn 3 points for every dollar spent on Woolworths Select brand purchases.
