Is AAMI Australian owned?

AAMI, which stands for the Australian Associated Motor Insurers Limited, is owned by Australian insurance provider Suncorp. It was founded in Australia in 1970 and has been a subsidiary of Suncorp since 2007.

What does AAMI’s comprehensive car insurance cover?

The highest level of car insurance AAMI offers, AAMI’s comprehensive cover includes:

  • One year free of Roadside Assist. AAMI offers roadside assistance at no extra cost for the first year that you hold your comprehensive car insurance policy.

  • Up to $20 million of legal liability cover, should you damage someone else’s car or property.

  • Accidental loss or damage to your car. This covers a wide range of events from theft to hail storms and vandalism.

  • Cover for accessories and modifications

  • A hire car following a not-at-fault accident

  • New for old replacement cover. If your car is less than two years old and is considered a write-off as a result of an incident covered by your policy, AAMI will replace it.

  • A lifetime guarantee on authorised repairs.

Does AAMI offer roadside assistance?

Yes, AAMI does offer roadside assistance as an optional extra. Not only that, but when you sign up to a comprehensive car insurance policy with AAMI for the first time, you’ll receive the first year of roadside assistance at no extra cost. After that the cost will be up to $86 each year.

AAMI’s ‘Roadside Assist’ offers:

  • 24/7 help

  • Help with jump starting or replacing a flat battery

  • Help with changing a tyre

  • Up to $10 worth of emergency fuel, to help you make it to the nearest petrol station.

  • Help with lost or locked out keys. AAMI will pay up to $250 for a spare key to be delivered to you, or to help you gain access to your car.

  • Help towing your car to an accredited repairer. AAMI will tow your car up to 20kms from where it broke down. Or if there is no accredited repairer within 20kms, the provider will tow your wheels up to 100kms to the nearest accredited repairer.

What optional extras does AAMI offer?

Besides roadside assistance, AAMI offers cover for a hire car following an accident and windscreen and window glass cover.

Adding ‘hire car’ cover to your policy will ensure that you can access a hire car for an unlimited number of days following an accident. AAMI will cover ‘reasonable hire car costs’ up to $90 per day until either your claim is settled or you get your ride back.

The other optional extra you can add to your policy is ‘windscreen and window glass cover’. This optional extra will ensure that you pay no excess for one claim per year on repairs or replacement for your car windscreen, window glass or sunroof, when it is damaged as a result of an insured event.

More FAQs on AAMI's comprehensive car insurance.

Should I opt for the low or high excess option?

The excess refers to the amount you’ll have to pay when you make a claim before AAMI will pay for anything. For example, you might have $500 worth of damage to your car and a $200 excess. You would pay $200 and AAMI would pay the extra $300.

You can tailor your policy by choosing to pay a high excess and therefore lower premiums, or lowering your excess in return for higher premiums. The former might be a good idea if you don’t have much cash up front and the likelihood of an accident is low. The latter might be handy because it means you’ll only have to come up with a small sum of money in an emergency.

Does AAMI offer CTP insurance?

Yes, AAMI does offer CTP (compulsory third party) car insurance. However, it is only available to drivers in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales and South Australia.

In the ACT, this is called Motor Accident Injuries cover and if you want to go with AAMI, you can select it as your preferred insurance provider upon registering your vehicle with Access Canberra.

What does AAMI’s third party property car insurance cover?

Besides CTP insurance, AAMI also offers third party property car insurance. While CTP cover is a legal requirement all over Australia, third party property cover is optional. That said, it might be a good idea to have it, if you don’t want to wind up with a big bill from the mechanics.

AAMI’s third party property car insurance provides:

  • $20 million of legal liability

  • Cover for damage to other people’s property

  • Up to $5,000 worth of cover for damage to your car caused by an uninsured driver.

It should be noted that third party car insurance does not provide cover for damage done to your own car. The only exception to this is if it is damaged by an uninsured driver (as mentioned above). Or, you can opt for additional third party cover which includes cover for fire or theft damage caused to your car.

This optional cover for fire and theft includes:

  • Up to $10,000 worth of cover for fire and theft damage

  • A hire car following a theft, up to a maximum of 21 days

  • Up to $500 worth of personal items cover. This is to cover any personal items such as laptops, phones etc, if they are stolen from your car.

How can I save with AAMI?

There are a few ways to save money with AAMI’s comprehensive car insurance, including:

  • One year of roadside assistance, at no extra cost

  • An online discount, at the time of writing AAMI was offering a $50 discount for comprehensive car insurance policies purchased online

  • With AAMI’s Flexi-Premiums. If you choose a higher excess, you can reduce the cost of your premium, if you choose a lower excess your premium will be higher, but you’ll pay less at claim time.

  • Paying annually rather than monthly. Paying your premium in monthly installments will cost you a bit extra.

  • As much as a 10% discount if you pass AAMI’s Skilled Driver Course. The course is aimed at drivers under 25 and is open to those with a P-Plate or full license.

  • Money off with AAMI’s Safe Driver Rewards program.

Does AAMI offer a no claims discount?

Yes, AAMI does have its own version of a no claims bonus discount - the AAMI Safe Driver Rewards program.

Similar to a no claims discount, this program rewards you for driving safely and not making any claims. You’ll start out on ‘Gold Status’ and if you drive safely for a year and make no claims, you’ll receive a ‘Safe Driver Rewards credit’. This will start at 2.5% and increase to a maximum of 15% after ten years of driving safely.

If you have roadside assistance with AAMI you might also be eligible to receive a discount on that. Discounts with AAMI’s roadside assistance cover start at 5% after three years of safe driving and go up to a maximum of 25% after nine years.

The discounts are broken down as follows:

How is my premium calculated?

Your car insurance premium is calculated on the likelihood of you making a claim, which AAMI predicts based on a number of factors like:

  • The make, model and colour of your car
  • Special features or modifications on your car
  • Where you live and where you keep your car (e.g. in a garage, on the street, etc.)
  • How often and who drives the car

How can I pay my premium?

You can pay your AAMI premium annually or monthly, but if you choose to pay it in monthly installments, remember that it will cost extra. Payment options include online payment through the AAMI website, Bpay, over the phone, through old school mail and by popping into the post office.

What cover do I have in an emergency?

AAMI will cover the cost of towing your car if it breaks down, as well as alternate travel and accommodation if you’re far from home at the time. Just keep in mind that you’ll need to get in contact with AAMI before having any repairs done, or else they might not be covered under your policy.

AAMI has been amazing over the past 10 years I've been with them and my family also follows them and will vouch that they are so incredibly reliable and I can definitely recommend them to anyone seeking car or house insurance.

Excellent overall cover

The signing up process for AAMI is incredibly straight forward and on par with what you'd expect from most car insurance providers. Value in terms of the kind of coverage you get per dollar spent was better then most of the insurers i compared with for an identical car and policy type. AAMI is absolutely the winner in this aspect. Customer service, I've only dealt with on a few ocassions. Once during sign-up, when i had questions about claims, when i had to update my payment details and a handfull of other times. Everyone i've spoken to has been incredibly helpful and friendly. Their self-serve portal and being able to apply using an application or through their website is probably their best aspect. All in all, i strongly recommend AAMI as a car insurance provider and should you be in the market for a new policy I'd give them a shot.

I WILL NEVER RETURN TO AAMI

Following the accident AAMI were initially helpful. Before the claim has been settled I received a review to complete on their service, which I rated as high. However it all changed after that. Calling them took 45 minutes. Then I was told to call back - they wouldn’t call me back when an officer was available, nor could I email them. When I agreed on the claim settlement they assured me that I would get this set amount. However they did not stick to this agreement and later decided to hold back money. Also, I paid my insurance 10 days before the accident and they kept every cent of that too. Please know that some insurance companies will refund your unused insurance. No not AAMI. They prefer to keep your money. I have two car insurances with them, green slips and house insurance. This will change following my experience of making a claim with them. Honestly I was so disappointed. The process was painful.
