Bankwest car insurance

Bankwest has been providing banking and insurance products since 1895, back when it was called the Agricultural Bank of Western Australia. What kind of car insurance does Bankwest offer?

You can take out a Bankwest policy across the three main levels of voluntary car insurance: comprehensive cover, third party property damage and third party fire and theft. However, you’ll need to look elsewhere for your compulsory third party (CTP) insurance, which you legally need to register a car and drive on Australian roads.

Third party property damage will provide limited protection for if you damage other vehicles in an accident, while fire and theft car insurance does the same as well as covering your own wheels in the event of them being stolen or set alight.

Comprehensive car insurance from Bankwest is the broadest level of cover you can take out, insuring your own car and others against accidental damages, as well as things like theft, weather damage and emergency support measures. Let’s explore more of what this comprehensive option offers.

What does my Bankwest comprehensive car insurance cover?

Like all insurance policies, comprehensive car insurance from Bankwest has a list of specific inclusions, exclusions, optional extras and coverage limits. You should read more about these in the relevant product disclosure statement (PDS) before taking out a policy. To get you started, here are some of the standard inclusions in a Bankwest comprehensive car insurance policy:

  • New-for-old car replacement if yours is written off

  • Up to $500 personal item cover plus $500 for baby capsules and child seats

  • Up to $2,000 for replacement keys

  • Up to $1,000 trailer and caravan cover

  • Up to $800 for emergency repairs, $600 for accommodation (if you’re stranded more than 200km away from home) and $500 for emergency travel

  • Reasonable towing and storage costs

  • Disability and mobility aids kept inside your car covered for up to $1,000

  • Car hire coverage after a theft for up to 14 days at $75-per-day

  • Vet costs up to $1,000 if your pet is injured in an accident

What isn’t included in my Bankwest coverage?

While a lot of what you might be after is included in a Bankwest car insurance policy, there are some exclusions. Some of these are:

  • General wear and tear, including rust and tyre damage

  • Structural, mechanical and electrical failures or breakdowns

  • Anything that happens if a person is; an unaccompanied learner driver, driving without a licence, speeding or disobeying road rules, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or driving without vehicle registration.

How is my Bankwest premium calculated?

Lots of different things can affect how Bankwest determines your car insurance premium. This can include, but isn’t limited to:

  • Your age, gender and driving experience

  • Your insurance claims history and driving history (including things like speeding tickets and road accidents)

  • How you use your car and where you keep it (in a garage vs on the kerb)

  • The car’s make, model and current value

  • The colour of your car.

All of these factors and statistics related to them are considered in relation to determining how likely you are to make a claim on your insurance policy. Generally speaking, the less likely you are to make a claim, the less you’ll pay on your premium.

What car insurance discounts does Bankwest offer?

Keep an eye out for discounts to keep your Bankwest car insurance premium low. Some discounts available from Bankwest include:

  • No claims discount (this is different for each state but can go as high as 70%)

  • Up to 10% discount when you apply for and buy your policy online

How to make a claim on my Bankwest car insurance

You should give Bankwest a call if you ever need to make a claim on your car insurance. When you do, make sure you have information regarding your claim handy, including:

  • The name, contact details and insurance information of any drivers involved in the accident

  • The registration number of all vehicles involved in the accident

  • The name and contact details of any witnesses to the accident

  • Your car insurance policy number and rego details

  • The road conditions at the time of the incident

  • Photos of the damages

  • A police report, if applicable.

You should also do your best to ensure your vehicle isn’t damaged further or a potential road hazard. This could involve calling emergency services and organising towing through your insurance.

FAQs about Bankwest car insurance

What optional extras can I add to my Bankwest policy?

A lot of the things you might want from a car insurance policy are already covered by Bankwest, but a few that you might think about adding as extras (at an additional cost) include:

  • The cost of a rental car after an accident

  • Excess-free glass repairs and replacements

  • No claim discount protection, which allows you to make one claim per-policy-period without your no claims bonus being affected

  • Bankwest’s restricted driver option, which provides a discount on your premium if you don’t have anyone under the age of 30 drive you car (remember your insurance is void if someone under the age limit is behind the wheel during an accident)

  • Optional additional basic excess, which essentially adds another layer of excess which you’ll have to pay at claim time in exchange for a further reduced premium.

Should I opt for the low or high excess option with Bankwest?

You can choose between low or high excess with Bankwest car insurance cover. Which one is right for you depends on your budgeting style and financial circumstances.

A high excess means you don’t have to pay as much on your upfront premium, but you will have to come up with more cash if you do have to make a claim. On the other hand, low excess means that you’ll be charged less before your cover kicks in, but you have to pay a higher premium annually.

What’s the difference between ‘agreed’ and ‘market’ value car insurance?

Market value is the price your vehicle would fetch if it were up for sale at the time of a claim, whereas agreed value is a fixed amount your insurance provider agrees to cover your car for when you take out a policy. Choosing an agreed value will usually increase your premium, as this is normally set higher than the market value.

Generally, you’d opt for agreed value if your car is particularly new or specialised and would be pricier or more difficult to replace or repair.

How can I pay my Bankwest premium?

With Bankwest car insurance, you can pay your premium month-by-month at no extra cost, or pay it annually as one lump sum.

What cover do I have in an emergency?

Although roadside assistance isn’t covered under your Bankwest insurance, you will have other support in an emergency. This includes costs covered for essential repairs without an assessment, towing, alternative travel options and accommodation (make sure you know the limits for each of these policy inclusions).
