Who is Youi underwritten by?

Unlike most other insurance companies which are underwritten by a larger separate insurance company, Youi underwrites its own policies. That’s because Youi (Youi Pty Ltd) is an Australian registered general insurance company, owned by Youi Holdings Pty Ltd. This in turn is a subsidiary of OUTsurance International Holdings Pty Ltd, which is itself a subsidiary of the international insurance services provider Rand Merchant Insurance Holdings (RMIH) Group.

What types of car insurance does Youi offer?

When it comes to protecting your wheels, Youi offers three main types of car insurance: third party property only, third party fire and theft and comprehensive.

Youi also providers compulsory third party insurance (CTP) for drivers in NSW. Otherwise known as a 'green slip', this kind of insurance is a requirement for all drivers in Australia. It covers you for costs related to injuries and deaths that might be caused during a road accident. So, if you're organising car insurance in NSW, be sure to sort out CTP first.

What does Youi’s comprehensive car insurance cover?

The first thing worth noting with Youi’s standard comprehensive car insurance, is that roadside assistance and towing cover is included. In most other comprehensive car insurance policies, these features are only available as optional extras. Meaning you would usually pay a bit more for them.

Besides this, Youi’s comprehensive car insurance policy also covers:

  • Up to $20 million in legal liability cover, if your car causes damage to someone else’s vehicle or property.
  • New car replacement, if yours is written off within 24 months of purchasing it. To be eligible, you will have to have driven it less than 500km since it was registered in your name. Or it will have to have been driven less than 40,000km since it was first registered.
  • Contents inside your car, if damaged or stolen. That includes a maximum cover of up to $750, up to $150 per item.
  • Reasonable cover for baby seat/s, plus other additions including personalised plates, a towbar and window tinting.
  • Up to $1,000 worth of cover for emergency accommodation, transport or repairs. This applies if you are more than 100km from home and you are involved in an insured event.
  • Up to $1,500 worth of cover for trailers
  • Fire, theft, storm, flood or earthquake damage
  • Accidental damage
  • Intentional damage, unless the person who causes the damage lives at the same address where the car is kept, is a listed driver, you have given them permission to drive the car or is acting with your consent.
  • Hire car costs, if your car is stolen or damaged as a result of an accident that is not your fault.
  • Reasonable towing and storage costs
  • Temporary replacement car
  • Replacement keys or lock recoding

What does Youi’s roadside assistance cover?

Included in Youi’s comprehensive car insurance policy, Youi’s roadside assistance cover entitles you to two callouts per year. After that you will have to pay for each additional callout.

Each callout includes cover for the following, plus limits:

Locksmith

 Up to $150

Towing

Up to 50km in regional areas and 20km in metro areas

  • Up to $2,500 worth of cover for an unbraked trailer

  • Up to $1,000 worth of cover (after excess) for work items

  • Cover for campervan/motorhome contents

What does Youi’s third party property only car insurance cover?

Youi’s most basic level of car insurance, the third party property only policy provides protection if you accidentally hit someone else’s car. This insurance comes with:

  • Up to $20 million in legal liability cover

  • Temporary replacement car cover

  • Up to $5,000 worth of cover for accidental damage done to your car by an uninsured third party.

What does Youi’s third party fire and theft car insurance cover?

One step up from Youi’s third party property only insurance, third party fire and theft car insurance provides cover for damage that your car causes and for damage done to your car by fire, theft and earthquakes.

In a little more detail it includes:

  • Up to $20 million in legal liability cover

  • Temporary replacement car cover

  • Fire damage cover

  • Cover for damage caused by theft or attempted theft

  • Earthquake damage cover

  • Up to $1,000 of emergency accommodation, transport or repairs cover. If your car is unsafe to drive after an insured event and you are more than 100km from home.

  • Reasonable towing and storage costs cover

  • Reasonable cover for baby seat/s, plus other additions including personalised plates, a towbar and window tinting

  • Cover for work items, if they are stolen from a locked boot or locked compartment, or damaged as a result of an insured event

  • Cover for campervan/motorhome contents, if they are lost or damaged as a result of an insured event

  • Choice of repairer

What does Youi’s third party car insurance not cover?

Unless your car is damaged by an uninsured driver, a fire or a theft, Youi’s third party car insurance will not insure damage done to your own wheels. In other words, if you are involved in an accident that is your fault, unless you have a comprehensive policy, you probably won’t be covered.

In a little more detail neither third party property or third party fire and theft include cover for:

  • Accidental damage

  • Intentional damage

  • Storm or flood damage

  • A hire car following a not-at-fault accident (third party only provides cover for a hire car following a theft)

  • Roadside assistance

If you want to make sure you are covered for the above events, you will have to opt for Youi’s comprehensive car insurance policy. Third party property only car insurance does also not include cover for:

  • Fire, theft and earthquake damage

  • Emergency accommodation, transport and repairs

  • Towing costs

  • Cover for additions to the car, including baby seat/s, personalised registration plates, a towbar and window tinting

  • Locks and keys cover

  • Cover for contents inside the car

  • Hire car cover following a theft.

Does Youi provide cover for counselling services?

All Youi car insurance policies offer up to $1,500 worth of cover per household member for counselling services following a claim.

How much does Youi car insurance cost?

The cost of your car insurance is made up of a few different things, including:

1. Your premium. This is mostly based on how much of a risk you pose to the insurance provider, i.e. how likely you are to make a claim. The factors Youi looks at to determine this include:

  • The make, model and age of your car

  • What you use your car for

  • Where you usually park your car, e.g. whether it is tucked away in a garage or parked out on the street

  • Your age, plus the age and driving experience of any drivers listed on your policy

  • Your claims history

  • Any optional extras added to your policy, e.g. choice of repairer

  • Administration costs, taxes and government charges.

2. Discounts

Youi does not offer a no claims discount. However, it does offer 20% off, if you bundle your contents and car insurance together.

3. Excess

You can raise or lower your Youi premium by opting for a different level of excess. If you choose a high excess, you’ll pay a lower premium, and vice versa. Just remember that if you opt for a low premium, high excess policy - which might be tempting if your budget is tight - you’ll have to come up with more money in the event of an emergency.

Also, keep in mind that there’s an extra excess if someone not listed on your policy has an accident while driving your car.

How do I pay my premium?

With Youi you can pay your premium via direct debit, or if you have an eligible credit card you can pay that way. Your car insurance premium is usually paid upfront as a lump annual sum each time you renew your policy. Although there is the option to pay your Youi premium in monthly installments, just remember that it will cost extra to do it this way.

To make a claim on your Youi policy, you can call or fill in an online form. Whichever method you decide works best for you, remember that you’ll need to provide some details in order for your claim to be processed.

This includes:

  • Your policy number and personal contact details.

Fantastic experience & excellent, affordable cover

I was with another insurance company and the price for my comprehensive car insurance had gone up by 12% this year compared to last year. I shopped around and YouI had the best price. The policy was cheaper that what my previous provider had ever quoted me. YouI also included roadside assistance in the policy (the other insurance company had that as an extra you had to pay for) so it provided more cover. The YouI representative I spoke to was also very helpful. He made the process very easy and emailed me the quote before I paid to allow me time to review everything. He booked a time for a follow up phone call to discuss if I was happy to go ahead with the policy. He called on time. Payment was automatically made on the day the cover started which was also great. Overall a fantastic experience.

No hold queue - answer within 30 secs :)

Premium were a little higher than previous car insurance but actually included more for the money. Customer service is friendly and efficient - and no message when i rang to inform they were extremely busy so I might be on hold for and hour or so!
