When it comes to service on car insurance, women scored their insurer 8.14, while men only scored a 7.74 and travel insurance also saw a gap between the genders. Tasmanians and South Australians are the happiest with their insurer while Victorians and Queenslanders are the least happy states overall.

The Mozo People’s Choice Insurance Awards revealed the best travel, car and home insurers from 255 providers based on the reviews of almost 10,000 insurance customers across Australia. Interestingly, some of the biggest providers don’t make the cut.

While Real Insurance was rated as the best car insurer, Youi topped the list of home insurers and Southern Cross Travel Insurance took the award for the best travel insurer.

According to people’s reviews, Aussies are turning away from the big insurance providers and instead preferring small and specialist insurers for better value and service. This trend is evident from the scorecard, which shows that some of the biggest insurers scored an average 7.6 across three categories while the average score of the combined winners was as high as 8.5.

“Price seems to be the biggest driver of satisfaction, with those scoring the highest for price also scoring best overall,” said Mozo Director, Kirsty Lamont.

The factor that led to lower scores for some of the insurers was service and the way they handle claims.

“The biggest gripe among customers is the claims process, which is the real moment of truth for insurers, most negative reviews were related to refusal to pay claims, delays in claim payments and the attitude of staff,” said Lamont.

One travel insurance reviewer, Mark, said “I had a bag of valuables stolen whilst on bus trip. Got back and was given the run around for days trying to reach the right person to talk to. When got onto the right person, they were unsympathetic and no help at all (with) no reimbursement.”

Other major reasons for dissatisfaction were hidden T&Cs and unwarranted policy price hikes.
