Women 'should ask for pay rises'

Australian women need to stand up for themselves and demand pay rises, an expert has said.

Alysia Hamilton, head of the networking group GLAM (Girls Learning About Money), told News Limited that as living costs rise, all workers will be demanding improved pay.

She added that the companies themselves are expecting calls for better wages following last year’s pay freezes.

However, Ms Hamilton argued that while men learn to compete from a young age, many women are not confident enough to make such demands.

"So when you are at work and competing with boys, the girls don’t know how to play the ball game and we have to learn or lose. Boys respond to the game," she said.

A range of rising costs have prompted some Australians to compare savings accounts in search of the best interest rates. Last week, the Herald Sun reported that financial advisers are expecting to be overwhelmed with debt concerns as households struggle to pay higher water and power bills this year.
