More wins for Melbourne at tourism awards

Melbourne's booming tourism industry dominated at the annual RACV Victorian Tourism Awards on Monday night. The Melbourne Cup Carnival won gold in the Major Festivals and Events category for the third year in a row, earning its place in the Hall of Fame.

"Melbourne is in a competitive market for the tourism dollar," Destination Melbourne chief executive, Laura Cavallo said in a statement.

"We need to ensure that the experiences and events that form the Melbourne visitor experience are always at the top of their game."

Melbourne Zoo celebrated a win as Favorite Metropolitan Attraction and took to social media to thank fans for supporting a proud Melbourne icon.

"Thank you Victoria for voting #melbournezoo the #racvvta people's choice award," Melbourne Zoo tweeted.

According to its website, over two million people visit the Zoos Victoria attraction annually.

Regional Victoria was also recognised for its tourism efforts, with the City of Ballarat winning the Tourism Attraction Award.

Cavallo predicted the world's most liveable city is well positioned to rival Sydney at the Australian Tourism Awards in February.

"We have no doubt they will do well when measured against other national award winners," Cavallo said.

Planning a trip to Melbourne or heading overseas soon? Keep these hints and tips in mind when planning your vacay:

1. Decide on a budget. Set your money aside and budget effectively to make sure you're right to go before the big day. Check out our travel hub to keep up to date with travel news and advice.

2. Compare travel money deals. For holidays within Australia, consider a 0% interest credit card, so you won’t be charged for a honeymoon or introductory period. Just remember to keep track of when the honeymoon period ends and pay it off in time to avoid the high revert rate! Alternatively if you’re travelling overseas, head to Mozo’s Travel Money section and discover the top deals in the market.

3. Protect your wallet with decent travel insurance. Jetsetting overseas could leave you in a pickle if things go awry, especially when it comes to the high cost of medical expenses. But a travel insurance policy with unlimited cover will set your mind at ease. Compare travel insurance options here.
