The Travelex Cash Passport is a prepaid Mastercard which allows you to load your holiday budget onto the card at a locked in exchange rate. You can use the card to withdraw cash at ATMs and make purchases wherever Mastercard is accepted, plus it is the only travel card with a chip and pin facility for added security. Where you will get stung with this travel card is when you use it for purchases or withdrawals in a currency other than the one on the card. The Travelex travel card has a 8.45% cross currency conversion fee, so say you're travelling to the US via Hong Kong and you use the card in Kowloon to buy lunch. Because you don't have HKD on the card you will be charged the high cross currency conversion fee making those dumplings seem like you ate at a Michelin Star restaurant.
Key features: The Travelex Cash Passport multi-currency card is the only prepaid travel card which has a variable purchase fee, the greater of $15 or 1.1% of the load amount. ATM fees on the Travelex Prepaid Mastercard are at the competitive end of the scale - 1.99 USD, 2.15 GBP, 1.20 EUR, 4.00 NZD per withdrawal.
If your prepaid card is lost or stolen while you are travelling there is no fee for replacing the Cash Passport card. Travelex also offers support services for while you're away including a legal and interpreter service, send a message home service and emergency cash via money transfers.
Who it's good for: The Travelex Prepaid Mastercard is a single currency card so it is a good card for someone with a fixed itinerary who only want to use their card in set destinations. If you want to be more spontaneous about where you end up there are other cards that charge less, or even don't charge at all, for purchases in currencies not loaded on your card.
For the big spenders the Travelex Prepaid Mastercard has some of the highest load limits of all the prepaid debit cards (50,000 USD and 30,000 EUR) it won't cost the earth in fees.
Any catches? Most cards have a flat amount for their load fee rather than this card's 1.1% (with a minimum of $15). Watch out for the high cross currency conversion fee which will add 8.45% to every transaction that's not in the currency loaded on your card (unless you have AUD loaded then the cross currency conversion drops to 5.45%).
And budget accordingly, there's a monthly inactivity fee and a $10 account closure fee if you come home with funds still on the prepaid card.
