  • Birthdays on a budget

Although seasonal spending is probably a concern for many parents, those with birthdays to fund as well may be finding things particularly difficult.

In a bid to relieve the strain NineMSN has suggested planning an old-fashioned birthday party which relies more on imagination than investments in clowns or bouncy castles.

Sara Verge, editor of Wondertime magazine, has insisted that by keeping the child in mind, parents can keep little ones entertained on a shoe string.

“Children aren’t going to be impressed by designer cupcakes – they just want to have a party and play with their friends. Keep it simple,” she advises.

Other top tips included keeping parties short and packing them with activities, which will cut down on catering costs, while Ms Verge also insisted that parents should keep their lolly bags small to keep food costs down.

NineMSN also recently suggested that for those who want to teach their kids the value of money, opening up a child bank account can allow them to get into the habit of saving early.ADNFCR-1761-ID-18935266-ADNFCR
