Hynch splashes the cash on crystal Scrabble
Wednesday 24 December 2008While Scrabble has proved popular across generations and all over the globe, it is unlikely that many fans of the board game would show the kind of commitment to it that Derryn Hinch has.
According to the Herald Sun, the celeb has just forked out big time for a Swarovski Scrabble set valued at $30,000 as a Christmas present to himself.
While he might have something of a career interest in the game – having written two books on it – he told the paper that he hadn’t banked on forking out an additional $2,000 on getting the 150kg set airlifted to Richmond.
“I watched the countdown [on eBay] tick down and bingo, I won it. Then I found out it weighed 150kg. I should have bought a car instead,” he joked.
And while Hinch’s bank account is probably feeling the pain of the extravagant purchase, it might be lucky that he’s not more of a chess man as he could just be tempted by the Jewel Royale set, which will upon completion become the world’s most expensive board game.
It is expected to carry a price tag of US$5 million ($7.325 million) and is made from yellow gold, diamonds and platinum.
