Despite tired stereotypes of women splashing huge amounts on new shoes and other hot fashion trends, it turns out guys are actually more indiscriminate when it comes to spending splurges.

Such is the claim of the Advertiser, which has pointed to a new poll which suggests that it is men who are increasingly running into problems due to debts racked up on credit cards, personal loans and the like.

The research from debt collectors Dun & Bradstreet has shown that the problem is particularly pronounced among the younger generations, with chief executive Christine Christian explaining that more than half of all debtors in Australia are under the age of 34.

“To avoid an increase in over-indebtedness in the new year, it is absolutely critical that consumers pay close attention to their finances,” she advised.

Last week, the Courier Mail also warned young consumers to be diligent when using credit cards online after figures showed that crooks were able to lift $33 million from bank accounts and cards using phishing scams.ADNFCR-1761-ID-18945102-ADNFCR
