Westpac allows you to bank on the go with Apple Watch

With the Apple Watch hitting stores today, a great range of apps have been launched to allow Aussies to do everything from book a taxi to check into a hotel with the touch of their wrist.

Now Westpac and St.George have jumped on board, launching a mobile banking app for the Apple Watch, allowing customers to check their bank balance, find their nearest ATM or branch and receive travel notifications at the airport to advise Westpac of their travel plans prior to jetsetting overseas.

With around 370,000 smart watches purchased in 2014, Westpac’s General Manager Harry Wendt said that Australians have a voracious appetite for new technology devices. “By offering secure banking on the latest Apple device we are giving our customers even more choice in how they want to interact with us.”

Customers who want to use the banking app on their Apple Watch will need an iPhone 5 or above with iOS 8.2 or above and will also need to ensure they have the latest version of their Westpac or St.George Mobile Banking app installed on their iPhone.

For Aussies who prefer the Android alternative, the Commonwealth Bank is also set to launch a CommBank app for smart watches, with features including bank balance access, an ATM locator and the ability to make cardless cash withdrawals from ATMs using their smart watch.

According to CommBank General Manager Lisa Frazier, smart watches represent the next exciting generation of personal mobile devices. “We are at the start of a new way of banking and together with our customers’ passion for mobile and cardless banking, we will lead in developing ways to fully leverage the capabilities of smart watches.”
