My colleague came into work today and said “Did you know Junk Free June is coming up?”
Two thoughts crossed my mind:
- What!! It’s nearly June already, that means my tax return will be due soon!
- Do I actually have the discipline to give up junk food for an entire month?
I’ve given up a vice before, as last year I said goodbye to alcohol for Dry July, so why not try ditching junk food?
Not only will I be eating clean for an entire month but I’ll also be supporting a worthy cause, as 100% of the funds raised will be donated to the Cancer Council Queensland.
So after greater deliberation, I’ve come to the conclusion that yes, while it might be hard to halt my late night chocolate snacks and Thai takeaway, I’ll do it for 30 days.
If you think you might join me in my attempt to forgo my biggest food temptations, here are some tips for Junk Free June success:
1. Sign up.
If you go to the Junk Free June page and sign up, you’ll really feel accountable to finish the challenge, especially if you share your account with your friends and family to make donations.
2. Have a junk filled meal (before June kicks off).
With two days left until June arrives, have your fill of your favourite junk food delights. I know I’ll be heading out with my husband for one last night of spring rolls and pad thai.
3. Hide your junk food where you can’t find it.
You know the saying out of sight, out of mind? So before June begins, clean out your fridge and pantry of any junk food, that could cause you to lose your resolve during the month.
4. Test out new recipes.
Eating healthy foods doesn’t have to be boring. Websites like taste.com.au are home to countless recipes for guilt free meals that will see you successfully through the junk free month.
5. Put the money saved to good use.
I spend at least $100 a week on food splurges, so my rough estimate is this month I’ll save at least $400. Where will I stash that extra cash? In a savings account of course. So if you don’t already have one, I would definitely recommend having a look around for one with a high interest rate here.
