Lotto tickets vs savings interest: July – September

This is the third installment of my very scientific look at the world of gambling. You can find the previous three months here, and the beginning of it all over here.

Welcome back to the She’s On The Money savings account vs lotto ticket experiment! Strap on your safety goggles and adjust your pocket protector – it’s time to get science-y.

In case you haven’t heard the spiel yet, this super rigorous experiment is designed to answer the question, “If I had a spare $100 every week this year, what would be a better use of my money – sticking it in a savings account, or using it to buy lotto tickets?”

So far, the answer has been pretty clear. I’ve been having phantom pain in my wallet all year just thinking about the amount I would have lost on the lotto so far.

But in the name of science, I will soldier on. Who knows – I may yet hit a jackpot just in time for Christmas.

July

At this point, it would take a small miracle for my lotto tickets to wind up being worth more than my savings account.

Still at 3.05% with RaboDirect, after a month full of rate cuts. Another couple of small wins. At this point, I’m making about half of what I spend on lotto tickets back in winnings.
Total savings with interest: $2,828.61 Total winnings: $45.80

Running total: -$2,049.55

August

As I was looking over my absolute lack of lotto wins this month, I started thinking that maybe it’s not that the odds of winning lotto are so bad that I didn’t score a win, even playing 74 games each week, but that my numbers are just plain unlucky.

Then I saw a vision of myself at sixty, sitting at a poker machine insisting that next time I’d hit my lucky streak, and told myself to stop being crazy.

RaboDirect has come through again this month with 3.05%. Once again, I won a whole lot of nothing. Not one win across all of my games.
Total savings with interest: $3,236.82 Total winnings: Zilch.

Running total: -$2,438.15

August winner: savings account

September

September is my lucky month! Don’t get too excited – I didn’t suddenly hit it big and won the (hypothetical) jackpot. But I did win back over $100, which is a major victory.

RaboDirect is still out in front with 3.05% on its savings account. I actually had multiple wins – not big ones, but at this point, I’m willing to take quantity over quality.
Total savings with interest: $3,646.06

Total winnings: $103.15.

Running total: -$2,723.60

September winner: savings account

Tune in at the end of October to see how next month goes – you never know, I could get lucky and hit the jackpot. In which case, should I be happy, or incredibly bitter? Tough call
