It is your responsibility to check credit card statements

Too many Aussies are failing to notice mistakes when using their credit cards and it is costing them a huge amount of money.

There are around 7.72 million credit card holders across the country and people are certainly not shy when it comes to using their plastic, as government figures showed the nation has a collective debt in the region of $36 billion.

According to the Financial Ombudsman Service, the number of people complaining about errors on their statements grew by 44 per cent in 2011, National Features reports.

In 2010-11, more than 10,000 grievances were aired relating to incorrect transactions or unfair charges.

HSBC's David Walker said customers need to be more responsible and ensure they are checking their statements more frequently.

"If you get charged twice you should go back to the company that has charged you twice and if it's an honest mistake then obviously they'll refund it," he told the news provider.
