Woolworths replaces Qantas Frequent Flyer program with $10 off your shop scheme

Supermarket giant Woolworths has scrapped its QFF points program and will be replacing it with a loyalty scheme that rewards its 9 million customers with cash discounts off their shop.

In a statement Woolworths explained the revitalised loyalty program, dubbed ‘Woolworths Rewards’, will allow members of the program to earn $10 off their shopping at least twice as fast as its major competitor’s loyalty scheme.

Research conducted by Woolworths showed that 68% of its customers want money off their shopping, compared to just 9% who prefer accruing points. On top of this shoppers think it takes too long to accrue enough points in loyalty programs to redeem rewards in points-based schemes.

The new program will allow customers to earn ‘Woolworths Dollars’ rather than Qantas Frequent Flyer Points at participating Woolworths Supermarkets and BWS stores when they use their Woolworths Rewards card at the checkout. Items that accrue Woolworths Dollars are marked with an orange ticket. Once a customer’s Woolworths Dollars balance reaches $10, that amount will be taken off their next shopping bill.

“Woolworths Rewards gives customers money off their shopping, fast. The beauty of the program is customers just shop as normal and the rewards look after themselves. It’s 100% relevant to 100% of our shoppers, totally automatic and hassle free,” Woolworths Food Group Managing Director, Brad Banducci said.

“Our customers also want relevant offers, tailored to them, from their supermarket loyalty program. Woolworths Rewards will ensure they receive many more offers on products they know and love or are likely to try.”

Analysis by the Australian Consumer, Retail and Services (ACRS) research unit at Monash Business School showed it would take a typical shopper spending $108 per week just over seven weeks to earn enough Woolworths Dollars to take $10 off their shop.

If you’re a Woolworths rewards member you should automatically receive a new Woolworths Rewards card in the post from Wednesday 28 October.
