Mozo snapshot

The Citi Emirates World Mastercard directly links to the Emirates Skyward rewards program and all points earnt will go to that account. But there’s more than just points on offer, the card comes with other premium perks, such as free travel insurance and purchase protections. However, points earning is capped at $10,000 each month, limiting your reward earning potential.

key icon
Key features

As the name suggest the Citi Emirates World Mastercard is credit card with a special connection to Emirates. The card automatically attributes points earnt to your Emirates Skywards rewards program. Before diving into the perks, first things first - the Citi Emirates World Mastercard does come with a hefty 21.49% purchase rate.

There are few things you’ll need to know about points earning though, the first being that points are capped. For the first $3,000 spent in a month you’ll earn 1 point per dollar spent, but for every dollar spent between $3001 and $10,000 you’ll only earn 0.5 points. After $10,000 spent on a month on the card, you’ll earn no points.

On the bright side, points are uncapped for eligible international purchases and will actually earn you 1.25 points per dollar spent. Plus, you’ll earn 1.5 points for ever dollar spent on airline tickets purchased via emirates.com.

There’s even more good news, because there are 50,000 bonus points on offer if you make a purchase with the card within the first 90 days. Plus an extra 10,000 points if you spend at least $500 on emirates.com. Just remember, you'll need to apply before 30 June 2020 to be eligible.

While rewards points are great, so are the other bonuses that the card already comes with. These include complimentary travel insurance, extra warranty on products purchased with the card and extra purchase protection. On top of this, there are also perks such as 1 complimentary chauffeur ride to and from the airport each year, 2 lounges passes to any Emirates lounge in Australia per year and free win every time you dine with the Citibank Dining Program.

Having debt on another card can be a real drag, especially if that card has a high purchase rate. To help save you some money on debt the Citi Emirates World Mastercard comes with 9 months of 0% interest on balance transfers (22.24% afterwards), giving you a little time to pay off that debt, without interest. Just remember that no interest free days apply to new retail purchases while you have a balance transfer.

The card also comes with a couple neat features, such as the option to link the card with either Apple or Samsung Pay, the ability to have up to four additional cardholders and a $149 annual fee in the first year ($299 afterwards).

snapshot
Who is it good for

Emirates loyalists who want to have their credit card rewards program linked with their flight rewards and will make full use of all the travel perks on offer are most likely best suited for this card.

snapshot
Any catches

If you are looking to really start racking up the points, you may find this card is a bit restrictive. This is because for your spends between $3001 and $10,000 spent on the card in a month, you’ll only earn 0.5 points and no points will be earned after $10,000; except on eligible international purchases.

How do we calculate the rewards?

To work out the "Rewards value minus fees" in our Rewards Revealer we:

  • calculate how many points you'd get each year,

  • figure out how many flights or gift cards or cashback credits you could get for those points,

  • work out what that's actually worth to you,

  • take off the annual fee you'd pay.

More details:

  • Our calculations are designed to help you compare the value of different rewards schemes. To do this, we've looked at earning a one-way Sydney-Melbourne flight excluding taxes and charges, a return Sydney-London flight excluding taxes and charges, a $100 shopping Gift Card and $100 cashback. Most cards will also offer other rewards, which may be worth more or less than the ones we've shown.

  • We have made no allowance for bonus points for using your card at specific merchants, introductory offers or special offers. We have not assigned any value to instant discounts, insurances, ticketing and concierge services or other such benefits.

  • Rewards value calculations do not take credit card interest into account. If you do not pay off your card each month you may be better off looking for a card based on interest rates than on the value of rewards.

  • In products that have more than one card, a different mix of spend between American Express / Visa / Mastercard will give different results. Mozo's Rewards Revealer lets you choose the mix based on the way you would use such a product, and gives you tailored results.

  • We assume flights purchased with airline points are 'classic' or 'reward' economy seats with restricted seat availability. 'Any seat' rewards will probably cost more.

  • To compare the value of flight rewards, we sample online retail flight prices once a quarter based on the average price on a Wednesday 3 months in advance but outside NSW school holidays. For domestic flights we take the lowest available fare from each flight on that day from Qantas Red e-deal, Virgin Australia Saver including baggage and Jetstar Starter including baggage. We calculate the average price excluding taxes and surcharges for each airline, and also the average across all airlines (which we use when rewards are travel agent vouchers). For international flights, we take the lowest available fares on that same Wednesday from each of Qantas, Emirates, Malaysian, Etihad, Singapore, Cathay Pacific and Thai, assuming a return flight 2 weeks later, calculate the average price before taxes and surcharges and use this as our assumed cost of a flight on any airline.

  • Shopping rewards are based on $100 gift cards from a major national department store.

  • We make every effort to ensure our calculations are correct and up to date but make no guarantees.

Please do not use this bank.

The most dishonest financial institution I have ever dealt with. I have not used this card in over 12 months because of previous questionable behaviour and was unfortunately persuaded out of cancelling the card at that time. Today I received a bill for $390.00 and was threatened with a credit default notice, outrageous annual fee charged several months ago without notice and a range of outrageous fees and charges subsequently levied. I was not contacted by the bank at any stage regarding this despite regular harassing phone calls with a range of worthless offers. Honestly do yourself a favour stay away. I use ANZ who are a pleasure to deal with in comparison.

Expensive, good for air miles only

Expensive card, accepted almost everywhere. Good customer service. I have it for the emirates frequent flyer points, which is the only reason to have this card.
