Mozo Review   Citi Rewards Platinum Credit Card (Bonus Points) Review

Last updated: 1 October 2019.

What's hot:
  • 80,000 bonus points when you spend $3,000 within 90 days from card approval

  • 0% p.a. balance transfer rate for 15 months (1% BT fee)

  • $49 annual fee in the first year ($149 after)

What's not:
  • High 21.49% purchase rate

  • High 22.24% cash advance rate

Mozo snapshot:

Who doesn’t like getting extra rewards from using their credit card? The Citi Platinum rewards program means you’ll be racking up flights and gift cards that make spending all the more rewarding. Choose the Bonus Points Offer on the Citi Platinum card and you can earn 80,000 bonus points when you spend $3,000 within 90 days from card approval with an additional 40,000 bonus points awarded on payment of the second year annual fee.

Key features:

If you’re into earning extra rewards like free flights or cashback, then you’re in luck because that’s exactly what’s on offer with the Citi Platinum credit card. For every dollar you spend you’ll get 1 point, capped at 10,000 points per statement period. But, the good news for travellers and online shoppers is you can earn unlimited points on eligible international vendors.

By choosing the Citi Platinum Bonus Points Offer, you can earn 80,000 bonus points on the Citi Platinum card. How? Just spend $3,000 within 90 days from card approval. Not too shabby!

You can also earn 1 point per $1 on regular spends, capped at $10,000 a month in Australia, or uncapped on international spends. Just keep an eye on the 3.40% foreign exchange margin.

Considering all that rewards value, the annual fee of $149 is fairly competitive, plus for the first year you’ll only pay $49.

Having your purchases instantly incur interest can be a tad confronting, so the up to 55 interest free days gives you that little breathing room. But if you do miss a payment you’ll be hit with a $30 late payment fee, so beware.

If you’re looking to clear some debt, this card also comes with a 0% balance transfer offer for 15 months, with a 1% BT fee. After that, the interest on any leftover balances reverts to the cash advance rate of 22.24%, so make sure you pay off your balance before the interest free period ends. And keep in mind, you won't get interest free days on new purchases while you're using the balance transfer offer.

Who it's good for:

If you’re a big spender wanting to plump up your points stash and cash in on all the premium extras your heart desires, this card could be the perfect pick for you.

Any catches?

While additional cardholders are a great way to rack up extra points and you can have up to 4 of them, it’ll cost you $90 per extra card.

How do we calculate the rewards?

To work out the "Rewards value minus fees" in our Rewards Revealer we:

  • calculate how many points you'd get each year,

  • figure out how many flights or gift cards or cashback credits you could get for those points,

  • work out what that's actually worth to you,

  • take off the annual fee you'd pay.

More details:

  • Our calculations are designed to help you compare the value of different rewards schemes. To do this, we've looked at earning a one-way Sydney-Melbourne flight excluding taxes and charges, a return Sydney-London flight excluding taxes and charges, a $100 shopping Gift Card and $100 cashback. Most cards will also offer other rewards, which may be worth more or less than the ones we've shown.

  • We have made no allowance for bonus points for using your card at specific merchants, introductory offers or special offers. We have not assigned any value to instant discounts, insurances, ticketing and concierge services or other such benefits.

  • Rewards value calculations do not take credit card interest into account. If you do not pay off your card each month you may be better off looking for a card based on interest rates than on the value of rewards.

  • In products that have more than one card, a different mix of spend between American Express / Visa / Mastercard will give different results. Mozo's Rewards Revealer lets you choose the mix based on the way you would use such a product, and gives you tailored results.

  • We assume flights purchased with airline points are 'classic' or 'reward' economy seats with restricted seat availability. 'Any seat' rewards will probably cost more.

  • To compare the value of flight rewards, we sample online retail flight prices once a quarter based on the average price on a Wednesday 3 months in advance but outside NSW school holidays. For domestic flights we take the lowest available fare from each flight on that day from Qantas Red e-deal, Virgin Australia Saver including baggage and Jetstar Starter including baggage. We calculate the average price excluding taxes and surcharges for each airline, and also the average across all airlines (which we use when rewards are travel agent vouchers). For international flights, we take the lowest available fares on that same Wednesday from each of Qantas, Emirates, Malaysian, Etihad, Singapore, Cathay Pacific and Thai, assuming a return flight 2 weeks later, calculate the average price before taxes and surcharges and use this as our assumed cost of a flight on any airline.

  • Shopping rewards are based on $100 gift cards from a major national department store.

  • We make every effort to ensure our calculations are correct and up to date but make no guarantees.

Citi offered so many things to switch to them quite a few years ago, then a couple of years later took them away. They have only 2 branches in the city that I'm aware of, and at both, it is incredibly difficult to get assistance. They are understaffed, and staff on hand don't have the authority to fix many problems.

Citi are like most other banks, they charge too much interest on credit but they do remind you if you are late.....usually. Where they fall down is when you want to leave. I finally paid mine off & left a credit in the account & requested it to be closed, this didn't occur so the account was hit with an annual fee which I didn't realise for months as I never looked at the account, I received no calls to say anything was wrong until much later when there were also late payment fees. The account was now hundreds overdrawn so I told them what happened, requested it all be reversed & the account closed, not to call me but email for anything. The calls started coming thick & fast & I refused to answer but no emails were received. The same thing happened with my NAB credit card but NAB immediately reversed everything, closed the account & apologised but Citi just kept calling. I kept refusing to answer & kept emailing them with the same request to stop calling, reverse everything & email me. Multiple requests later & they are still not responding apart from the phone calls so I'll be making a formal complaint to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA).
