Mozo Review   St.George Amplify Signature Review

Last updated: 1 August 2018.

What's hot:
  • 90,000 Amplify or Qantas bonus points (min spend applies)

  • Complimentary extras like 24/7 concierge service, travel insurance and extended warranty

  • Reduced annual fee in the first year

What's not:
  • 3.00% foreign exchange margin

Mozo snapshot:

Rewards lovers at home and abroad will be able to get excellent value from this piece of premium plastic by choosing either the Amplify Rewards or Qantas option. With generous bonus points plus perks like complimentary travel insurance and a 24/7 concierge service, the Amplify Signature card is a great option for money-savvy freebie chasers.

Key features:

There’s a lot to love with this rewards credit card. The St.George Amplify Signature card comes with a 19.49% interest rate and a $279 annual fee, although that's discounted to $179 in the first year. Other fees to be aware of include a 3.00% foreign exchange margin and a $15 late payment fee.

As far as rewards go, there are two options to choose from - a Qantas card for avid travellers, and an Amplify Rewards option for more general rewards lovers.

One of the main differences between the two is how many points you’ll earn per $1 spent. Opt for the Amplify Rewards card, and you’ll bag 1.5 points for every $1 spent, but choose the Qantas version, and you’ll only earn 0.75 points per $1. The tradeoff is that those points are credited directly to your Qantas Frequent Flyer program to make redeeming them easier.

You can bag 90,000 bonus Amplify or Qantas points when you spend $4,000 within 90 days of approval. Both options also come with a tonne of points earning power and great freebies, including:

  • Uncapped points earning and no expiry date for points, so you can stack them up for as long as you like.

  • Earn double points on overseas purchases (including from international merchants online.)

  • On your Birthday, you’ll receive 10% of the points you earned in the previous year as bonus points.

  • 2 complimentary airport lounge passes each year you hold the card.

  • A range of complimentary insurance covers, including international travel insurance, extended warranty, purchase protection and guaranteed pricing.

  • When travelling with this card in your wallet, you’ll also become an member of Visa Luxury Hotel Collection, which means you can score 3pm checkouts at over 900 hotels, complimentary continental breakfasts and hotel room upgrades.

That’s a lot of value packed into one little credit card!

Who it's good for:

There are plenty of perks to tempt rewards lovers of all kinds here, but frequent travellers who love to fly Qantas will really come out on top, thanks to all the travel friendly rewards on offer. It’s also a good option for anyone addicted to shopping online with international retailers, who will pay their bill off in full each month.

As with most rewards credit cards, big spenders who will use the rewards program enough to justify the ongoing annual fee will get the most value from this piece of plastic.

Any catches?

If you’re using this card overseas or for online shopping, be mindful of the 3.00% foreign exchange margin.

Keep in mind the $279 annual fee after the first year and 19.49% interest rate - so put in place a plan to fit the fee into your budget, and pay off your balance each month to avoid interest charges.

How do we calculate the rewards?

To work out the "Rewards value minus fees" in our Rewards Revealer we:

  • calculate how many points you'd get each year,

  • figure out how many flights or gift cards or cashback credits you could get for those points,

  • work out what that's actually worth to you,

  • take off the annual fee you'd pay.

More details:

  • Our calculations are designed to help you compare the value of different rewards schemes. To do this, we've looked at earning a one-way Sydney-Melbourne flight excluding taxes and charges, a return Sydney-London flight excluding taxes and charges, a $100 shopping Gift Card and $100 cashback. Most cards will also offer other rewards, which may be worth more or less than the ones we've shown.

  • We have made no allowance for bonus points for using your card at specific merchants, introductory offers or special offers. We have not assigned any value to instant discounts, insurances, ticketing and concierge services or other such benefits.

  • Rewards value calculations do not take credit card interest into account. If you do not pay off your card each month you may be better off looking for a card based on interest rates than on the value of rewards.

  • In products that have more than one card, a different mix of spend between American Express / Visa / Mastercard will give different results. Mozo's Rewards Revealer lets you choose the mix based on the way you would use such a product, and gives you tailored results.

  • We assume flights purchased with airline points are 'classic' or 'reward' economy seats with restricted seat availability. 'Any seat' rewards will probably cost more.

  • To compare the value of flight rewards, we sample online retail flight prices once a quarter based on the average price on a Wednesday 3 months in advance but outside NSW school holidays. For domestic flights we take the lowest available fare from each flight on that day from Qantas Red e-deal, Virgin Australia Saver including baggage and Jetstar Starter including baggage. We calculate the average price excluding taxes and surcharges for each airline, and also the average across all airlines (which we use when rewards are travel agent vouchers). For international flights, we take the lowest available fares on that same Wednesday from each of Qantas, Emirates, Malaysian, Etihad, Singapore, Cathay Pacific and Thai, assuming a return flight 2 weeks later, calculate the average price before taxes and surcharges and use this as our assumed cost of a flight on any airline.

  • Shopping rewards are based on $100 gift cards from a major national department store.

  • We make every effort to ensure our calculations are correct and up to date but make no guarantees.

After moving from Adelaide, we had to find a new banking resource. We checked out St. Greorge because they are affiliated with our old, BankSA but we were quite prepared to change banks if necessary. The staff at St. George Market Place in Leichhardt were exceptional and led us through the entire process, recommending upgraded products where appropriate. They demonstrated a real interest in and empathy for us, and this has been our on-going experience over our first year in Sydney.
