ATM machines may start to carry advertisements

Debit card users may be able to use ATM machines for free if they are willing to watch an advertisement before taking out their cash.

Corporate affairs manager at Customers ATM – which operates 6,000 cash point terminals – Rohan Martin admitted that the concept could be rolled out nationwide in the near future.

He suggested that major companies are understandably keen to advertise their services in this way, but his organisation is mindful that such a move may irritate Aussies, as going to the cash point should be as quick and convenient as possible.

This news comes after a Mozo study showed that the cost of withdrawing money from an ATM machine has now reached $2.50 per transaction, which could encourage more people to use machines that carry no fee.

US-based firm Free ATMs NYC has already introduced the advertising concept and millions of users have embraced the system.

However, Australian Bankers' Association chief executive officer Stephen Munchenberg said he would be surprised if it caught on down under.
