Aussie travellers offered debit card warning
Australians should consider their debit card use carefully when travelling abroad, it has been suggested.
A National Features report presented in the Herald Sun notes that international travel is particularly affordable at present thanks to the strong Australian dollar, cheap airfares and numerous loyalty schemes.
However, Aussies were warned to think about their cash, cheque and card requirements before venturing overseas in light of high currency exchange and withdrawal fees.
Costa Anastasiou, chief executive of Police Credit Union SA & NT, also advised always having some local currency to hand upon arrival at a destination.
"The easiest way to obtain the local currency is via an ATM using your credit or debit card but be mindful of fees charged. The best currencies to travel with are generally US dollars and euros," he told National Features.
Consumers aiming to get the most for their money can choose to compare debit cards and other financial products in search of the best deals. Mr Anastasiou also recommended using traveller's cheques as they are still widely accepted in foreign destinations.
