Aussies that love to purchase goods online using their debit cards are likely to become increasingly reliant on their smartphones, a new study has found.

Smartphones 'growing more popular with online shoppers'

Business analyst IBISWorld revealed that the number of goods purchased using the devices is expected to grow by 50 per cent in 2011-12 compared to the preceding 12-month period.

The firm forecast that in the coming year, there will be a surge in the number of businesses heading online to reach a greater number of customers and provide consumers with greater flexibility when purchasing products.

In 2010, the report found that there were 25 million transactions made on the internet by Aussies using smartphones.

The forecast of an increase in purchases made online is particularly significant in light of the findings of a Deloitte Access Economics report released on June 8th 2011, which found that national retail sales are only expected to increase by 1.3 per cent this year.
