Debit card withdrawal limits 'spur on criminals'
High limits on withdrawals on debit and credit card machines make Aussies a target for criminals, it has been claimed.
According to Romanian police chief Elvis Tudose, who spoke at the National Identity Crime Symposium on the Gold Coast, gangs from the country single out Australian credit card users at ATMs.
This is because they perceive the legal system to be more lenient and because they can make more at cash machines because the withdrawal limit often ensure people withdraw more money.
"This is the reason they probably choose Australia," chief inspector Tudose said.
"You have bigger withdrawal limits at ATMs so, when they skim your cards, they can take more money.’‘
He also pointed out the fact that the machines themselves are older, which makes them weaker in security and easier to steal from – something that may make those looking for cheap credit cards extra vigilant when using plastic.
According to the Reserve Bank of Australia, people opted for debit over credit cards throughout August.
