More Aussies use debit cards for online gambling, figures show
A rapidly increasing number of Aussies are using their debit cards in order to gamble online, it has been revealed.
Gambling researchers at Southern Cross University conducted a study that found that the demand for internet poker and sports betting was huge across the country, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
The survey accounted for 6,500 people and discovered that half of the respondents had taken up online betting in the past six years.
Of this number, 16 per cent lost an average of $825 a month and are deemed to be "problem gamblers".
"Australia is one of the strongest international markets for online gambling, particularly online sports betting, on which an estimated $600 million is spent annually," leader of the research Sally Gainsbury was quoted as saying.
The increased demand for online services is not restricted to the gambling sector, as Dun & Bradstreet recently found that many retailers in Australia are concerned that people are increasingly buying goods via the web, rather than visiting bricks and mortar outlets on the high street.
