Noosa encourages shoppers by printing its own money
Retailers in Noosa have decided to print their own money in a bid to encourage more shoppers.
Restaurant and shop owners on Hastings Street have teamed up with Tourism Noosa to make "Hastings Street Dollars’’, which can be used directly as cash, the Courier-Mail reported.
The initiative may interest Aussies looking to compare debit cards in search of the best spending options. Tourists staying on Hastings Street automatically get $100 while shoppers are given $5 for every $50 they spend under the scheme.
According to the newspaper, it is hoped the promotion will inject more than $500,000 into the local economy.
Steve Cooper of Tourism Noosa said it has already proved popular with tourists, adding: "There has been a lack of consumer confidence in consumer spending across Australia and tourism hasn’t been immune to that."
Meanwhile, a recent report in the Advertiser suggested that Australian consumers can avoid accumulating huge debts by using interest-free retail promotions to purchase "big-ticket items".
