The Australian government’s ‘hotline’ for $900 stimulus payments is receiving an average of 8,400 calls a day, it has been revealed.

Approximately 7.9 million cheques have now been sent, according to officials, while another 800,000 Australians are eligible to apply for their own personal cash bonus upon filing a tax return for 2007-08, news.com.au reports.

A spokesperson for the Australian Tax Office told the website: "The majority of calls received by the tax office have been people asking about their eligibility."

Over 1 million calls have been dealt with by the hotline since it opened on February 4th 2009, with the first payments sent out in April of this year.

Australians planning on applying for the scheme should get their skates on though – they only have until June 30th this year to file their tax return and claim their one-off payment.

New statistics from the Reserve Bank of Australia have shown that many Australians are using their cash payments to pay off credit card and home loan debts amassed during the recession.
