Christmas deals encourage customers to compare credit cards
Shoppers are being encouraged to spend big this Christmas as retailers compete for Aussie dollars.
Richard Uechtritz, managing director of JB Hi-Fi electronic chain, noted that customer confidence was returning after a year of thrift and saving.
"Since the global financial recession, people have been paring down debt. They now have the capacity to spend and are not as worried about losing their jobs," he told the Australian newspaper. "Promotion-driven big-ticket items where you get a game station or camera free if you buy a television set are seducing shoppers to spend up big."
The newspaper found that in states where the hot weather has started early, sales of air conditioners and refrigerators were also strong. Seasonal deals have encouraged bank customers to compare credit cards in order to see how far their money can stretch.
Money expert John Kavanagh recently wrote for the Age that with all major banks now offering companion reward cards with credit cards, customers could get good returns on their spending if they chose credit cards carefully.
