Australians looking to get the best possible price for their home should give the entrance a thorough refurb before putting it on the market, renovation expert Vera Klein has advised.

Writing for Notebook, Ms Klein notes that first impressions are all-important to buyers and by giving the entrance a lick of paint, a new welcome mat and buying new doorway furniture, sellers can create the feeling that the home is well looked after.

In a rundown of the ten most effective ways to add value to a property, she also recommends repainting interior walls, updating flooring and sprucing up the kitchen with new cupboard handles, appliances or shelves.

"Sometimes making one major change in the kitchen is enough to lift the whole room, so if you don’t want to mess with the cabinetry, cast an objective eye over the splashback as it’s a way to inject some personality into the room," she adds.

Renovating homes may become more important over the coming months as property investors are set to overtake first-time buyers as the most dominant force in the home loan market.
