HIA welcomes Gold Coast construction initiative

The Housing Industry Association (HIA) has welcomed a new initiative aimed at boosting the building sector across the Gold Coast.

Members of the organisation said the Gold Coast City Council Kickstart Construction campaign sends out the right message to the rest of the country.

The scheme is aimed at making more commercial space available, as well as helping to address housing affordability across the region.

Aussies have found it extremely hard to find a new house or apartment that is within their price range and so the uptake of mortgages has been largely subdued in 2012, although recent interest rate cuts appear to have had a positive impact on demand.

The new building project should also help retirees downsize their homes without having to move to a different area, allowing them to pocket some much-needed retirement funds.

"This campaign is the first step in the Gold Coast's recovery," remarked Col Buttenshaw, HIA executive director of Gold Coast & Northern Rivers.
