Home loan customers call for planning changes
Article by Mozo
Aussie home loan customers feel that independent experts should have the final say on new housing developments in New South Wales (NSW), rather than council members.
Research conducted by Auspoll on behalf of the Property Council of Australia showed that 78 per cent of the 1,000 homeowners surveyed wanted power to be taken away from councillors when it comes to giving the green light for new building projects.
Around 83 per cent stated that independent panels generally kept politics out of any decisions, while 88 per cent thought that these groups offered better transparency.
NSW executive director Glenn Byres believes the results of the survey speak volumes.
"The role of the independent planning panels should be retained and consolidated in any new planning system to emerge in NSW," he remarked.
According to the eighth annual Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey, properties in Australia are among the most expensive in the world, with strict planning regulations one of the factors cited for the lack of development.
