Money may be tight for a lot of Australians, but that doesn't mean we have to let our standards slip.

According to a new survey conducted by Appliances Online, more than 50 per cent of people are planning to renovate their properties in the next four years, National Features reports.

Although many Aussies are worried about meeting their mortgage repayments, the organisation insisted that DIY enthusiasts can still give their abode a significant facelift without breaking the bank.

South Australians are the most likely to upgrade their pad in the next 12 months and chief executive at the firm John Winning insisted that the best place to start is the kitchen.

He suggested that it is vital that people have a plan in place before they start renovating their home, otherwise costs can soon escalate. In some cases, you will be surprised how a good clean can leave a room looking brand new.
