Purchasing a new property can be a lengthy process and it is easy for people to forget about what is important.

Once your home loan has been secured and an offer has been accepted, it is easy for buyers to think that everything is done and dusted.

However, one of the most important things to consider when you move into a new house is security.

New figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics have shown that cases of theft were more frequent in 2011 than they were in the previous 12 months.

It is extremely important that you fit all of the doors in your new home with adequate locks and alarms in order to protect your belongings.

Drivers in particular need to be on the ball, as the report showed that car crime is on the rise across the nation. There were more than 55,000 incidents of motor vehicle theft last year, which represented a 1.1 per cent rise on 2010. So maybe it is worth buying a new property that has a built-in garage.
