Aussies hoping to keep their car insurance payments to a minimum may want to consider purchasing a vehicle that is popular, as spare parts for it could be cheaper.

Cars with cheaper spare parts could cost less to insure

Machines that are less common could prove to be more expensive to insure, because if there is a problem with the automobile, the cost of spares could be higher.

When selecting a vehicle, car insurance should be one of the key considerations, as expensive or fast models may result in higher premiums.

While it may be tempting to purchase an older car and make modifications to improve its performance, this could also drive up the cost of insurance.

However, one of the few changes that may result in cheaper cover is installing new security features to make the car harder to steal or break into.

Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed that in September, the number of new car sales rose by 1.3 per cent year-on-year.
