Although the cost of vehicle ownership is threatening to spiral out of control, plenty of Aussies are still in the market for a new car.

Figures released by Roy Morgan Research have indicated that 2.2 million people will be on the lookout for a new motor in the next four years.

The study also indicated that Aussies are most responsive to adverts from Ford, Holden and to a lesser extent Toyota.

You may not realise it, but the model you eventually purchase can have a big say in how expensive your car insurance premiums are.

Insurers have every base covered and they will be fully aware of the size of engine a vehicle has and any quirks or deficiencies that may affect your ability to drive safely.

That is why it is so important not to let your heart rule your head when you enter a showroom.

You may have a passion for one particular brand, but you need to ask yourself if your new car will be cost effective when things like insurance costs and fuel consumption are taken into account.
