The cost of vehicle ownership has remained stubbornly high in the last few years – but are Aussie motorists throwing money away?

According to major retailer Coles, drivers are forking out $305 million more than they need to for car insurance, the Australian reports.

Finance director at the organisation Tony Buffin told the news provider that people are paying for extra cover that they are very unlikely to use.

He suggested that motorists in Sydney and Melbourne are overspending the most and there are major savings to be had.

A study conducted by the firm showed that more than one in two drivers feel it is not cost-effective to switch providers, but this is simply not the case.

You will be surprised just how much money you can save by comparing car insurance quotes online.

"Australian families have made it clear that they want quality insurance cover that costs less," Mr Buffin remarked.
