Many people may find it hard to believe, but the overall cost of running a vehicle has fallen in the past year.

The RAA has suggested that overall expenses have dropped by 0.4 per cent in the last 12 months, even though the price of fuel has soared.

Speaking to the Advertiser, the organisation's senior manager of mobility and automotive policy Mark Borlace said that most new models are now far more fuel-efficient, which means drivers do not have to fill them up as often.

Unsurprisingly, smaller vehicles are the most economical and Aussies should consider the size of the engine before making a purchase.

Of course, motorists who are still feeling the financial pinch can save some money by comparing car insurance policies.

There is every chance that you will come across a provider that will offer the same level of cover as your current supplier, but for far less money.
