To say that Australian drivers have become disillusioned with the high cost of petrol would be a bit of an understatement.

Prices at the pumps are sky-high and a lot of motorists have been forced to reduce the amount of time they spend in their vehicles.

New sales figures released by VFACTS have indicated that diesel-powered sports utility vehicles are proving increasingly popular among Australians.

By switching to diesel, drivers generally get more mileage for their dollar and with petrol being so expensive, it is unsurprising that so many people are embracing more economical cars.

More than 79,000 new vehicles were sold in total last month, which was a 6.6 per cent increase on the corresponding month in 2011.

Another way to make motoring more affordable is to compare car insurance premiums. Keeping a clean driving record has never been more essential, as insurers generally offer lower quotes to people who have no previous misdemeanours on their licence.
