NRMA Car Insurance has launched a free iPhone app designed to help consumers shop around for the best deals.

The app, named the Car Inspector, contains a range of up-to-date safety, security and environmental information for most new cars available in Australia, the company said.

It also encourages people to compare car insurance by allowing users to request a quote via a direct call to NRMA Insurance.

Robert McDonald, NRMA Car Insurance’s head of research, said consumers would be better supported in the car market by having such a "wealth of information" at their fingertips.

"NRMA Insurance Car Inspector enables drivers to read about most new cars in the Australian market while they’re on the go, wherever they are. It’s like having an expert with them in the car yard," he said.

It was reported earlier this week that Shane Jacobson, who played lovable plumber Kenny in the 2006 film of the same name, has been appointed as the new co-host of Top Gear Australia.
