Sydney car insurance customers to face higher meter charges

Car insurance customers who want to park in the centre of Sydney could face even higher charges after the council announced plans to raise meter charges.

Council-owned car parks will also become more expensive, with daily prices set to rise 12 per cent to $58 per day, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Motorists who are only in the centre for a brief time will have to pay $7 per hour to leave their vehicles in a metered zone.

However, those with car insurance for more vehicles that are better for the environment – such as hybrid autos – could find their outgoings are less when parking in the city centre.

Income forecasts from Sydney Council revealed plans to "introduce parking fees which give preferential treatment to eco-friendly vehicles at parking stations and on the city's streets".

According to a list compiled by MSN, London is the most expensive city in the world to park in, followed by Hong Kong and Tokyo in second and third respectively.
