It's undoubtedly easier said than done, but people should try to stay as calm as possible after being involved in a vehicle collision.

Although car insurance claims may be the furthest thing from your mind as you leave the motor in order to call the police, your actions in the aftermath of an incident can have a big say in whether your insurer pays out or not.

Speaking to the Courier-Mail, spokesman for RACQ Insurance Mike Sopinski said it is vital that people do not get flustered and start signing statements immediately after a crash.

Obviously, the first thing to ensure is everyone else involved is safe and well and that the police have been contacted.

Once you have calmed down and started to come to terms with the shock, it is also important that you obtain as much information as possible, as this will help an insurance company decide who was at fault.

"Motorists should be aware their actions may influence subsequent legal and insurance claims by you or against you," Mr Sopinski remarked.
