Australia Post doesn’t just deliver mail to your home anymore, now it also provides protection for it! That’s right Australia’s main delivery service offers insurance too. Plus with flood cover included as standard and the option to add a 30% underinsurance safety guard to your policy, it certainly has a lot to offer.

Key features

When it comes to protecting the bricks and mortar of your home, Australia Post has you covered. With this home building insurance, you could be covered for events including fire (including bushfire), explosions, theft, vandalism and even flooding. This is particularly notable as often flood cover is only available as an optional extra with home insurance.

If your home is damaged as a result of an insured event, some ways Australia Post could help you out are:

  • By carrying out essential repairs

  • By covering temporary accommodation costs and animal boarding

  • By covering rebuilding costs, including the removal of debris

  • By covering costs for forced evacuation.

Australia Post could pay up to 24 months worth of reasonable costs, or up to 20% of your sum insured for temporary accommodation costs, combined with temporary accommodation costs for pets. Whichever works out less. The policy could also cover you for up to $500 worth of emergency services costs.

As well as all this, Australia Post also offers underinsurance protection as an optional extra. With this Australia Post may pay up to 30% more than your sum insured if it is discovered that your property was undervalued.

Finally, it’s worth noting that limits do apply to all of these cover types. Plus, there are some exclusions to take into account. For example, trees, shrubs and plants are not covered and neither are veterinary expenses.

Who is it good for

This policy could be suited to someone who is worried about being underinsured. Underinsurance happens all too often in Australia, so if you want to protect yourself from it, this might be the insurance plan for you.

Any catches

Limits apply to cover, as such we would definitely recommend reading the full PDS first before you sign on the dotted line. There are also some exclusions including plants, credit card fraud and veterinary expenses.
