Frequently asked questions about 1300 Travel Insurance

Q1. Can I get travel insurance with 1300 if I have a pre-existing medical condition?

While certain pre-existing medical conditions can be covered under your travel insurance, you will need to check the PDS for a full definition of these conditions. There are a number of conditions that may be covered with no additional premium payable provided you have not been hospitalised for that condition in the 24 months prior to the time of your policy being issued. Some of these conditions include, asthma, cataracts, diabetes and single uncomplicated pregnancy, up to and including 23 weeks.

Q2. Does 1300 travel insurance cover my luggage?

If you’ve bought the Comprehensive, Frequent Traveller or Australia-only travel insurance policy, 1300 will provide up to $7,500 cover for lost or stolen luggage. With some policies you can also claim up to $250 to cover any emergency items that you need to purchase in case your luggage is delayed in transit by more than 12 hours.

Q3. What do I do if I face an emergency during my trip?

With your 1300 travel insurance policy you will have access to emergency assistance anywhere in the world. You will need to contact Allianz Global Assistance and they will help you locate medical facilities, embassies and consulates; get in touch with your family; or organise an evacuation home subject to the terms and conditions of the policy. Just make sure that you have your policy documents handy so that you have reference number wherever required.

Q4. Is there a cooling off period when I can cancel my policy?

Yes, if you decide that you don’t want a travel insurance policy with 1300 after buying the product, you can cancel it within 14 days after you are issued the Certificate of Insurance. You will be eligible for a full refund of the premium you paid during this period, provided you have not started your journey or you do not want to make a claim or exercise any other right under your policy.

Q5. What if I return earlier than planned, can I get a refund on my travel insurance?

No, you will not get any partial refunds for an early return. However, if you need to cancel or cut short your trip due to an illness or incident, you are eligible for a cancellation cover under the comprehensive, frequent traveller and domestic insurance policies. Also, if you return early, you may be able to make a claim for any money you lose on your prepaid travel arrangements.

Q6. Is it possible to extend the travel insurance policy once I have purchased it?

You can ask for an extension of your 1300 travel insurance policy at no additional cost if you find that your return to Australia has been delayed because of one or more of a bus line, airline, shipping line or rail authority you are travelling on, or that has accepted your fare or luggage and personal effects, is delayed; OR the delay is due to a reason for which you can claim under your policy.

If the delay is for any other reason, you’ll need to make sure you send in your request to extend your cover prior to your policy expiry date. Cover can be extended subject to the insurer’s written approval, and your payment of the additional premium. However, the period of cover on your new Certificate cannot exceed 12 months from the date of issue of your original Certificate of Insurance.

When I decided to take my first solo trip overseas recently, I was certain I wanted medical insurance in case I fell over Niagara falls whilst taking that amazing shot, or getting charged by an elephant in Africa which was close to happening. 1300 insurance had my back, no matter what silly antics I got up to. Their website was easy to navigate, tidy and easy to use, giving me an instant quote, which had so much better prices than others, whilst giving me the same cover as the more expensive companies. I was so impressed at the premiums and the price that I booked my travel insurance there and then! A year later, I needed to extend my cover, as I travelled longer than expected. I had to call them from overseas, which is difficult for anyone, but their friendly staff were easy to contact, took no time to answer my call and made me feel at ease knowing that they had my back. Lucky learning how to ski in Canada didn't land me with a broken leg, but even if it did, I would be pleased to deal with such a smooth running company. I recommended them to all my young friends for their un-complicated manner. The last thing I want to do is deal with a difficult insurance company whilst overseas, leave that job to my mum!

As I wasn't travelling to a third world country, I was happy to know that that I could claim for lost luggage more so than worrying about medical exspenses. I went through all the options and found their level of cover compared with the price as the best fit for. I wouldn't hesitate in using them again and would be happy to tell my friends and family to use them as well.
