Frequently asked questions about AIG travel insurance

Q1. Can I apply for AIG travel insurance?

If you are an Australian permanent resident and are under 70 years of age, you can apply for cover under an AIG Travel Insurance policy.

Q2. What if I am above 70 years of age?

You can look at AIG Mature Age Travel Insurance, which is available especially for travellers aged between 70 and 84 years at the time of departure. Do remember however, Family Cover is not available for travellers aged over 70.

If you are aged 85 years and over, you’ll need to contact AIG’s Medical Assessments Desk on 1800 008 473. They will then carry out an assessment after which you may purchase your policy over the phone from AIG customer service.

Q3. Does AIG travel insurance cover dependants?

Yes, financially dependent children or grandchildren, who are all under 25 years of age and who are travelling with you are covered under AIG’s Single as well as Family Cover. However, when you opt for the Family Cover, along with your kids, your spouse, de facto partner of either gender or any adult travelling companion named in the Certificate of Insurance (all of whom must be travelling with you) are also covered.

Q4. Am I eligible for a refund if I cancel my policy?

You are entitled to a refund if you cancel your travel insurance policy before your travel commences and within 14 days of purchase, provided you have not made any claim and are not planning to make a claim under your policy. AIG will refund your premium in full, less any non-refundable Existing Health Disorder assessment fees (where applicable).

Q5. Will I be covered for adventure activities?

Yes, AIG covers most amateur sporting and adventure activities at no extra cost on all plans. Adventure activities covered under the travel insurance policy include snow skiing, bungee jumping, para-sailing, water skiing, white water rafting, trekking, cycling and hot air ballooning. If you’re planning to participate any activities apart from the ones mentioned here, check with AIG at the time of buying the policy if you will be covered for that specific activity or not.

Q6. What can I do in case there is a medical emergency while I’m travelling?

With AIG you’ll have access to Travel Guard, which is a worldwide team of highly skilled doctors and medical professionals available by telephone 24 hours a day for assistance in the event of a medical emergency or any associated problems for travellers outside Australia. Depending on your situation, Travel Guard will help organise the treatment you need, keep the relevant people informed and monitor your progress until you are well and back in Australia.

AIG policy fine print quick guide

So you’ve read the basic features of AIG’s travel insurance policies and you’ve had most of your questions answered. But before you take a call on whether AIG is the perfect solution for your travel needs, you’ve got to read the fine print. Here’s a quick checklist of things you can look out for when you go through the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS):

Existing health disorders

AIG automatically covers some existing health disorders, such as, asthma, allergies and cataracts. You can check if your medical condition falls under the list of conditions covered by the policy. If not, then you will need to call Travel Guard for a phone-based medical assessment. Do note that if the Existing Health Disorder is accepted, a non-refundable $100 administrative fee will be charged for assessing your application for Existing Health Disorder cover.

Excluded destinations

AIG’s travel insurance policy does not cover any loss, injury, damage or legal liability arising directly or indirectly from travel to or through Afghanistan, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iran, Iraq, Liberia, Sudan, or Syria.

Cancellation fees and lost deposits

Your claim for cancellation fees or lost deposits can be rejected if there was a change of plans simply because you or your travelling companion change your mind and decide not to proceed with your original trip. You will also not be reimbursed if any tours are cancelled because there were not enough people to go.

Luggage and Personal Effects

You will not be covered for the loss of your travel documents, credit cards or travellers cheques if you don’t report it immediately to the company that issued them and follow their instructions. You will also not be reimbursed for luggage that you leave unattended or with someone you don’t know.

How to make a claim with AIG Travel Insurance

If you need to make a claim with AIG, you must register the claim within 30 days after completion of your travel. To acquire claims forms or any enquiries regarding your claim you can contact AIG for assistance over the phone or you can even file your claim online or download a claim form from AIG’s website.

While making a travel insurance claim with AIG, you’ll need to provide the following documents:
