At about 1.45pm yesterday, ACT police were alerted of a suspicious package in the canteen area of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Barton, Canberra.

As a standard safety precaution the premises were evacuated and road closures were implemented. Members of the AFP Bomb Response Team were also called in for attendance and at 3.50pm the package was located at DFAT and deemed “non-suspicious”.

According to news.com.au, station sergeant Donna Hofmeir told reporters the package was a backpack that had been accidentally left there by a staff member who was “extremely embarrassed”.

“There was nothing suspicious about it apart from the fact it was unattended.”

“It was just a mistake that she’s left it there.”

The website reported Hofmeir as saying people were jittery after the siege in Sydney, but denied there needed to be a review.

“I don’t think we will, I think our procedures worked very well today.”
