While the top travel and tourism destinations for competitiveness were recently revealed, this week the most dangerous cities have been uncovered by research company Verisk Maplecroft.

The research showed that 64 cities fall under the category of “extreme risk” across countries like Egypt, Israel, Kenya, Nigeria and Pakistan.

The study which looked at the intensity and frequency of attacks in the 12 months following February 2014, combined with the number and severity of incidents in the previous five years, found Iraq as an extremely high risk country with Baghdad listed as the highest risk urban centre in the world.

After this year’s Paris terrorist attack in January, the city has risen the most out of all the cities ranked, now sitting at 97th on the high risk list.

If you’re planning on jetsetting overseas and are unsure of the risk category the country you are visiting falls under, visit the Australian Government’s Smartraveller website. Also ensure you check with your travel insurer before leaving Australia that you will be protected in the country you're visiting, as travelling in a high risk country could void your cover.
